Sindh High Court terms suspension of healthcare facilities to retired PIA employees as unlawful
The Sindh High Court has ordered the
restoration of medical benefits for retired employees of Pakistan International Airlines, ruling
that the suspension of healthcare facilities under a new insurance arrangement
was unlawful.
In its decision, the court declared
that an agreement between the PIA Holding Company and State Life Insurance
Corporation of Pakistan violated existing legal protections granted to retired
employees.
The ruling came during hearings on
petitions filed by former PIA staff members and pensioners, including Air
League President Shamim Akmal, who challenged recent administrative changes
affecting access to healthcare services.
According to the petitioners,
retired employees had been shifted to a restricted insurance-based system that
limited treatment to selected hospitals and reduced access to medicines and
reimbursements for non-panel healthcare providers. Lawyers representing the
retirees argued that the changes created serious difficulties for elderly
pensioners who relied on long-standing medical coverage arrangements.

During the proceedings, the
government’s counsel informed the court that medical facilities for PIA
employees continued to be provided without interruption. The lawyer also argued
that the benefits were protected under the legal framework established through
the 2016 legislation and subsequent approvals by the airline’s board of
directors.
The court, however, ruled that the
suspension of medical facilities for retired employees by the PIA Holding
Company was illegal and ordered the restoration of the previous benefits
system.
The Sindh High Court also expressed
concern over what it described as unequal treatment among different categories
of PIA employees.
The latest judgment follows an
earlier ruling issued by a Karachi court on May 2, 2026, which similarly struck
down administrative orders affecting medical coverage for retired airline staff
and directed authorities to immediately restore prior healthcare arrangements.
The case comes at a sensitive time
for Pakistan International Airlines, which has been undergoing restructuring
and privatization-related reforms in recent years. Employee welfare, pensions
and healthcare benefits have remained key concerns among both serving and
retired workers as the national carrier continues efforts to reduce costs and
modernize operations.
