to implement bird deterrent systems at airports to enhance flight safety
In the first half of this year, 38 Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)
aircraft experienced bird strikes during both domestic and international
flights. These incidents were reported at airports in Lahore, Islamabad,
Multan, Faisalabad, Gilgit, Sukkur, Jeddah, and Dubai, affecting 31 Airbus
A320s and three Boeing 777s.
Of the 38 bird strikes, five resulted in damage, while the remaining 33
aircraft remained unharmed. Lahore Airport recorded the highest number of
strikes with 14 incidents, followed by Islamabad with seven and Multan with
four. There were also single incidents at Sukkur, Faisalabad, Gilgit, Jeddah,
and Dubai.
Most bird strikes occurred during critical flight phases such as takeoff,
landing, and approach. Concerns have been raised about aviation safety, with
sources attributing the rise in bird strikes to administrative negligence by
the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which has not implemented modern bird
deterrent systems at the country’s airports.

incidents of bird strike reported in Pakistan
Bird strikes pose significant safety risks, particularly during takeoff and
landing when aircraft are closer to the ground. The consequences can vary from
minor damage to severe incidents, including engine failure or structural harm,
which could endanger passengers and crew.
In response to the increasing number of bird strikes globally, aviation
authorities are enhancing safety measures, including the installation of bird
deterrent systems and better habitat management around airports.
