Safety drill conducted at Islamabad Airport to test preparations

A large-scale emergency exercise was conducted at Islamabad International Airport on Thursday to evaluate the preparedness, coordination, and response capabilities of all emergency agencies in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.

Organized by the Pakistan Airports Authority, the drill simulated a major aircraft accident involving an Airbus A320, followed by a mock aviation fuel fire to replicate a realistic crisis scenario. The objective was to assess the airport’s ability to manage large-scale emergencies, including firefighting, rescue, and medical evacuation operations, under high-pressure conditions.

Rescue and Firefighting Services teams demonstrated exceptional efficiency, responding within the ICAO-prescribed timeframe to control the simulated blaze and initiate rescue and medical evacuation procedures.

A highlight of the exercise was the participation of Pakistan Army Aviation’s MI-17 helicopter, which carried out an aeromedical evacuation of a critically injured dummy patient to a healthcare facility.

The exercise, codenamed AIRCON-25, was supervised by Chief Operating Officer and Airport Manager Syed Aftab Ali Shah Gilani, with CFRO Muhammad Tariq serving as Exercise Coordinator. Both officials emphasized that the successful execution of AIRCON-25 reflected the airport’s strong operational readiness and full compliance with ICAO safety standards.

Professor Muhammad Umar (SI, HI), Vice Chancellor of Rawalpindi Medical University and chief guest at the event, praised the professionalism, coordination, and dedication of all participants. He noted that such exercises are vital for strengthening national capacity to respond effectively to aviation emergencies and safeguard lives.
