Ethiopia and Pakistan discuss boosting cooperation in defence and aviation  

Ethiopia and Pakistan have agreed to expand their cooperation in defence and aviation, signaling a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two nations.

The agreement was reached during a meeting on October 6 between Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, Ethiopia’s Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary to Pakistan, and Khawaja Asif, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Defence.

The two officials discussed a wide range of areas for future collaboration, including defence, aviation, peace and security, climate change, trade, culture, and tourism.

Ambassador Jemal highlighted Ethiopia’s recent milestones, notably the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). He reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to equitable use of shared water resources and regional integration. He also expressed interest in expanding aviation links to Pakistan beyond the current Addis Ababa–Karachi route.

Minister Khawaja Asif praised Ethiopia’s socio-economic transformation under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and acknowledged the country’s growing role in promoting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Ethiopia’s development and peace building efforts.
