E-gates to enhance security and efficiency at Pakistani airports

In a move to modernize airport infrastructure and enhance travel efficiency, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced the installation of e-gates at the country’s three major airports: Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.

The e-gates will be placed at international arrival and departure lounges to streamline the immigration process, significantly reducing wait times for international travelers. Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), the system will automate documentation and biometric verification, allowing passengers to pass through immigration without direct interaction with officers.

According to PAA officials, around 100 e-gates will be installed as part of the project, which is expected to be completed within two years.

The basic design for the e-gates has been finalized by German experts from the globally recognized firm M2P. The firm conducted a three-day workshop in Karachi and held extensive consultations with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other stakeholders.

Adnan Ahmed, Additional Director of Engineering Services, confirmed that the project, launched in September last year, is progressing well. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader goal of upgrading airport facilities to international standards and improving both security and passenger convenience.

“The e-gates will offer a secure, scalable, and technology-driven solution, enhancing operational efficiency for both passengers and border control staff,” Ahmed said.

Officials noted that the system will not only improve the passenger experience by reducing hassle but also strengthen overall airport security through advanced digital verification.
