Pakistan to install e-gates at all major airports to improve efficiency
Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has announced plans to introduce electronic gates (e-gates) at several airports across the country, aiming to streamline immigration processes for travellers.
According to a spokesperson, the deployment of these advanced gates will enhance operational efficiency and bring Pakistan's immigration procedures in line with global standards.
Initially, the e-gates will be installed at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport, Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport, and Islamabad International Airport. The PCAA has invited proposals from technology firms interested in installing these e-gates, with submissions due by August 13. Travellers will be able to use the e-gates by scanning their passports, which is expected to reduce wait times and enhance the overall travel experience.

This initiative follows a recent security assessment conducted by a delegation from the General Civil Aviation Authority of the UAE at Karachi and Islamabad airports. Additionally, officials from Transport Canada are scheduled to visit Pakistan on July 14 to conduct an assessment at Karachi airport starting July 15, focusing on various aspects of aviation security and airport operations.
In a related development, Pakistan has decided to outsource management of three major airports to improve service delivery, starting with Islamabad International Airport for a period of 15 years. The government has clarified that critical services such as Air Traffic Control Tower, Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, and Air Navigation services will remain under the control of the PCAA.
