Gwadar Airport deploys modern Instrument Landing System (ILS)
The New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) has successfully deployed the
state-of-the-art Instrument Landing System (ILS) CAT-III(B), enhancing its
ability to facilitate safe aircraft landings and take-offs under challenging
weather conditions.
The ILS is a sophisticated ground-based navigation system providing precise
guidance to pilots during runway approaches, particularly in low-visibility
scenarios. This technology significantly improves safety and operational
efficiency during adverse weather.
According to an official from the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA),
the ILS CAT-III(B) enables aircraft to land with a Runway Visual Range (RVR) as
low as 50 meters. However, its effective operation relies on three key factors:
minimum visibility of 50 meters, pilots trained for such conditions, and
aircraft equipped with compatible avionics.

Airport officially granted the status of international airport
“The Civil Aviation Authority has advised all airlines to upgrade their
aircraft systems and ensure pilot training to fully utilize the ILS CAT-III(B)
benefits,” the official said. “This initiative will reduce passenger delays and
ensure safe operations during inclement weather.”
A representative from the Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) highlighted the
significance of advanced systems like the ILS CAT-III(B), noting that severe
weather often disrupts flight schedules, compromises safety, and increases
airline costs.
“Accurate situational awareness is essential for effective airport
operations,” the representative explained. “With this system, Gwadar Airport
can better handle challenges such as storms, low visibility, wind shifts,
precipitation, and runway conditions.”

The implementation of the ILS CAT-III(B) system represents a major
advancement in Gwadar Airport’s operational capabilities, ensuring safer air
travel and improved passenger experiences even under adverse weather
conditions.
