Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Qiang virtually inaugurated the airport in October during the latter's four-day bilateral visit to Pakistan. Calling the $200 million project a “gift” from China, PM Shehbaz emphasized its significance as a cornerstone of the multibillion-dollar CPEC initiative. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Islamabad.

The event coincided with the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government (CHG) meeting on October 15-16, which Premier Li attended under stringent security measures.

The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that Gwadar International Airport, among Pakistan’s largest, is now equipped to handle both domestic and international flights.
