Bangladesh to acquire short-range ballistic missiles from Pakistan
Bangladesh is reportedly pursuing the acquisition of short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) from Pakistan, specifically the “Abdali SRBM,” as a deterrent against potential threats from India amid strained bilateral ties, according to Indian media sources.
Citing an intelligence report, India.com claimed that Dhaka has
approached Islamabad to procure the Abdali SRBM, which has a range of 400
kilometers. This development is viewed as an effort by Bangladesh to bolster
its defense capabilities in response to potential regional aggression.
The claim emerges shortly after the United States imposed additional
sanctions on four Pakistan-based entities linked to the country’s ballistic
missile program. These entities include the Islamabad-based National
Development Complex and three Karachi-based companies: Affiliates
International, Akhtar and Sons Private Limited, and Rockside Enterprise.

In a statement, the U.S. State Department reiterated its commitment to
counter proliferation activities, emphasizing the importance of maintaining
global arms control measures.
Meanwhile, an article from the Indian Defence Research Wing
suggested that Pakistan might agree to the sale of Abdali SRBMs as part of its
strategy to enhance regional influence. The report, however, argued that the
acquisition of these missiles would not drastically alter the strategic balance
against Pakistan, given their limited range and intended focus on India, which
shares an extensive border with Bangladesh.
To fulfill Bangladesh’s request, Pakistan would need to navigate
international arms control frameworks, such as the Missile Technology Control
Regime (MTCR). Although neither Pakistan nor Bangladesh is a signatory to the
MTCR, these global regulations could complicate Islamabad’s decision-making
process.

Experts have warned that the Abdali SRBM, also known as “Hatf-II” in the
Pakistan Army, could pose a significant threat to northeastern India despite
its relatively short range. The tactical ballistic missile is capable of
targeting major cities in the region and was designed by Pakistan’s Space
Research Commission for rapid deployment in battlefield scenarios.
The alleged negotiations reflect ongoing shifts in the South Asian strategic
landscape and highlight the evolving defense priorities of regional players.
