In the interim, senior executive Khurram Mushtaq has been appointed as acting CEO, effective December 6. Mushtaq, who has previously led key departments including Commercial, Airport Services, Flight Services, Security, and Vigilance, is tasked with overseeing the airline as it prepares to resume operations in Europe.

PIA is yet to appoint a permanent CEO, a crucial step in stabilizing its operations and addressing ongoing challenges. The airline is currently undergoing financial restructuring and operational recovery following a failed privatization attempt in October, which drew only one offer significantly below its valuation.

PIA is set to resume flights to Europe in January 2025, starting with a Boeing 777 flight to Paris on January 10, following the lifting of a three-year ban by the EU aviation regulator. Bookings for the flight opened on December 9.

The EU suspended PIA's authorization to operate in June 2020 due to concerns over the ability of Pakistani authorities and the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure compliance with international aviation standards.

“We have received approval for the first flight’s schedule,” PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan confirmed, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to regaining its international presence and rebuilding customer trust.
