Pakistan interested in securing 5th freedom rights for its air carriers operating to and from Iraq

Pakistan is actively pursuing expanded aviation rights with Iraq for its air carriers. Air Marshal (retd) Farhat Hussain Khan, the advisor to the Prime Minister on Aviation, conveyed Pakistan's interest in securing 5th freedom rights for its air carriers operating to and from Iraq during a communication with the Ambassador of Iraq in Pakistan on January 16, 2024.

In addition to discussing aviation rights, both parties engaged in talks on various bilateral matters of shared interest. This included considerations such as the potential waiver of visa fees for pilgrims during Ashura and Arbaeen. The advisor emphasized Pakistan's dedication to facilitating additional bilateral flights, especially during Moharram, through collaborative discussions.

The meeting also touched upon the revision of the Air Services Agreement (ASA) between the two countries, with the aim of modernizing the existing agreement. The advisor highlighted the mutual advantages of improving air connectivity, foreseeing its positive impact on trade and tourism.

The Iraqi Ambassador reaffirmed his government's commitment to granting the 5th freedom right to Pakistani airlines. Both sides expressed a strong determination to reinforce their bilateral relations, particularly within the aviation sector, and agreed to maintain regular meetings to further this commitment.
