Pakistan’s South Air to launch commercial operations in June 2026

Pakistani private airline South Air is accelerating its fleet expansion as it prepares to commence commercial operations next month.

The startup airline plans to launch flights in June 2026, using ATR 72 aircraft as the backbone of its initial operations. South Air aims to establish itself as a regional carrier offering affordable short-haul connectivity across the country.

On May 8, the airline received its first ATR 72-500 in Karachi, marking a significant milestone for the fledgling carrier. The arrival ceremony underscored South Air’s readiness to enter Pakistan’s domestic aviation market, which has seen increasing demand for regional connectivity.

According to Pakistan Aviation News, a second ATR aircraft is expected to join the fleet next week. The swift addition of multiple aircraft indicates that South Air intends to launch with several planes, enhancing route coverage and operational reliability from day one.

The airline’s initial network will focus on connecting underserved destinations such as Gwadar, Turbat, and Panjgur with major hubs including Karachi, Quetta, and Islamabad. The ATR 72 turboprops are particularly suited for shorter runways and lower-demand regional routes, allowing South Air to serve destinations with limited commercial flight options.

Looking ahead, the airline plans to expand services to larger cities and tourism destinations, including Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gilgit, Chitral, and Skardu.

Industry experts note that South Air’s entry comes at a time when Pakistan’s aviation sector is seeking greater competition, enhanced domestic connectivity, and private-sector investment. The launch is expected to boost tourism and economic activity in northern and coastal regions while creating jobs in aviation and related industries.
