Foreign airlines account for more than 65% of Pakistan's international traffic
Foreign airlines now account for more than 65% of Pakistan’s international
air traffic, marking a significant shift in the country’s aviation landscape
over the past two decades.
According to data from the Gallup Pakistan Digital Analytics Aviation Dashboard,
foreign carriers handled 65.09% of the international passenger traffic to and
from Pakistan in 2023-24.
In contrast, Pakistan
International Airlines (PIA) carried just 18.90% of these passengers, while
other local airlines collectively held 16.01%. Together, domestic carriers now
make up roughly a third of the international market.

Looking back to 2006-07, PIA alone carried
42.84% of international passengers, while other Pakistani airlines held 6.73%.
At that time, foreign airlines made up 50.43% of the market. Domestic airlines
then controlled almost half of the market, compared to just around 35% today.
The data highlights a long-term decline in
PIA’s market share, while foreign airlines have steadily expanded. Although
private Pakistani carriers have seen growth, they have not been able to offset
the decline in PIA’s international services.
The report also points out that the increasing
reliance on foreign carriers means more international ticket revenue is being
sent abroad. It emphasizes ongoing challenges for domestic airlines, such as
fleet limitations, regulatory hurdles, financial constraints, and operational
reliability issues.
The
analysis covers international passenger traffic from 2006-07 through 2023-24.
