NA Panel requests Prime Minister to change the name of Islamabad Airport to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto International Airport

Nawabzada Iftikhar Ahmed Khan Babar, Chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Aviation, has formally asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to implement a 2022 National Assembly resolution to rename Islamabad International Airport as Shaheed Benazir Bhutto International Airport.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Nawabzada Iftikhar emphasized the symbolic significance of the resolution, which was passed on October 13, 2022, as a tribute to the enduring legacy of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. Despite its passage over two years ago, the resolution has yet to be acted upon, causing frustration among citizens and elected officials.

The letter highlights that renaming the airport would honor the former Prime Minister's sacrifices, leadership, and transformative contributions to Pakistan's political, social, and economic development. "Renaming the airport in her honor would be a fitting recognition of her remarkable service to Pakistan and her enduring influence," the letter states.

The chairman also referenced the Standing Committee’s meeting on November 13, 2024, during which the issue was discussed and unanimously supported. The committee resolved to recommend urgent action on implementing the resolution.

"The symbolic importance of this change cannot be overstated," the letter asserts, emphasizing that it would serve as a reminder of Benazir Bhutto's fight for democracy and justice. The chairman expressed confidence in the Prime Minister’s leadership to fulfill the will of the people and ensure swift implementation of the resolution.

The delay in executing this decision has drawn criticism from political leaders, civil society, and the public, further underlining the urgency of the matter.
