Pakistan transports old Boeing 737 airplane by road
In a first for Pakistan, a passenger
aircraft was transported by road on Thursday, creating an unusual spectacle for
onlookers.
The retired Boeing 737 was moved
from Karachi, the country’s commercial hub, to Hyderabad on a specially
equipped truck and trailer. The 154-kilometer journey took approximately two
and a half hours.
The rare sight brought to mind a
similar event in September, when three Boeing 777s were transported by road
across the deserts of Saudi Arabia.

To prepare the 110-foot-long, 40-ton
jet for transit, its wings and tail were disassembled and will be transported
separately, explained Hummayun Khalid, who coordinated the transfer.
Once reassembled at the Civil
Aviation Training Institute in Hyderabad, the aircraft will serve as a training
tool for airport firefighters.
Though traffic on the
Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway was not officially halted, the transport convoy
caused some congestion along the route.
