PIA facing legal action relating to unpaid engine leases
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is currently entangled in legal proceedings in the United States following a lawsuit filed by engine lessor Willis Lease Finance in the US District Court.
The lawsuit pertains to unpaid engine leases and
encompasses four individual lease agreements. Willis Lease Finance took this
course of action after issuing five default notices against
PIA.
On June 8, Willis filed a complaint against Pakistan
International Airlines Corporation Limited in the US District Court for the
Southern District of New York. The case is identified by the number
1:2023cv04855.
Subsequently, on June 9, the court issued a summons
against PIA, and an initial pretrial conference was ordered for June 13. PIA did
not have legal representation during the preliminary proceedings, but Anne C.
Lefever, a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman specializing in
commercial litigation and possessing extensive experience in aviation-related
legal matters, appeared on behalf of Willis.
In response to the dispute, a spokesperson for
PIA-Pakistan International Airlines refrained from commenting on the specific
details but did mention that the airline has made payments for all dues related
to the engines.
Furthermore, the engines are currently undergoing the
re-delivery/return process.
