Islamabad International Airport to install new system for flight safety
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) is
set to install a Low-Level
Wind Shear System (LLWS) at Islamabad International Airport to strengthen
flight safety and provide air traffic controllers with real-time warnings about
potentially hazardous wind conditions.
The project, costing Rs254 million, is expected to be completed within six
months, according to a statement issued by a Civil
Aviation Authority (CAA) spokesperson.
The system is designed to detect sudden changes in wind speed and direction
near the airport and immediately relay alerts to Air Traffic Control (ATC),
enabling controllers and flight crews to respond to potentially dangerous
conditions.
Wind shear can pose a significant threat during take-off and landing, when
abrupt changes in wind conditions may affect an aircraft’s airspeed, lift and
flight path. Timely warnings can help pilots and air traffic controllers make
informed operational decisions and reduce exposure to weather-related risks.

Modernising airport safety infrastructure
The installation is part of broader efforts to upgrade aviation safety infrastructure
and modernise Pakistan’s air navigation systems.
According to the CAA spokesperson, the project represents a step towards
improving operational safety through the introduction of advanced
weather-monitoring technology at one of the country’s major international
airports.
A low-level wind shear warning system provides information about localised
wind disturbances that may not be adequately identified through conventional
weather observations alone. Such systems are particularly valuable during critical
phases of flight, when rapid changes in atmospheric conditions can have serious
consequences.
Second agreement targets aviation communications
Separately, the PAA has signed another agreement covering the supply of
modern equipment for testing aviation radio communication systems.
The equipment is intended to improve the testing and monitoring of radio
systems used in communications between aircraft and air traffic controllers,
supporting more reliable air-ground communication.

The two agreements form part of the authority’s wider efforts to enhance
aviation safety and improve the performance of essential airport and air
navigation infrastructure.
Once operational, the wind shear detection system is expected to provide
Islamabad International Airport with an additional layer of safety by
delivering timely alerts about hazardous wind conditions, while the
radio-testing equipment is expected to support the reliability of aviation
communications.
