CAA conducts audit of PIA as part of regulatory oversight
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has
launched a two-day audit of Pakistan
International Airlines’ (PIA) ground handling operations at Jinnah
International Airport, as part of its ongoing regulatory oversight of the
national carrier.
CAA
inspectors are reviewing several aspects of PIA’s airport operations, including
passenger check-in procedures and the performance and responsiveness of airline
staff in dealing with travellers.
The
inspection is part of the authority’s periodic regulatory audits aimed at
assessing the airline’s compliance with applicable aviation standards and
operational requirements, particularly those relevant to its international
flight operations.
Similar
inspections have already been conducted at Islamabad and Lahore airports,
indicating a broader review of PIA’s ground operations across the country’s
major aviation hubs.
Focus on
operational compliance
The Karachi
audit is expected to assess whether PIA’s ground handling procedures are being
implemented in accordance with prescribed regulatory standards. Such
inspections are intended to identify operational shortcomings and ensure that
airlines maintain appropriate procedures for passenger handling and other
airport-facing services.

The latest
inspection comes against the backdrop of heightened regulatory scrutiny of PIA
in recent years, following concerns over pilot licensing and aviation safety
standards.
Last week,
the Ministry of Defence informed the National Assembly that the federal
government had revoked the licences of 50 pilots and suspended 33 others under
the Civil Aviation Rules, 1994.
According to
a written reply submitted during Question Hour, the action followed
international scrutiny of the credentials of Pakistani pilots after allegations
emerged concerning fraudulent or improperly issued licences.
International
repercussions
The
pilot-licence controversy had significant consequences for Pakistan’s aviation
industry and PIA’s international operations. The United Kingdom, European
Union and United States subsequently imposed restrictions on PIA’s
operations in their respective airspaces, affecting the airline’s access to
important international markets.
The
restrictions dealt a major blow to PIA, particularly because international
routes have historically represented some of the carrier’s most commercially
significant operations.

Against this
backdrop, continued regulatory audits by the CAA are important for

The latest Karachi
