PIA preparing to strengthen its presence in the United Kingdom market
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)
is preparing to strengthen its presence in the United Kingdom after securing
the return of 14 landing and take-off slots at London Heathrow Airport, opening the door
to a significant expansion of its London schedule.
The recovery of the coveted Heathrow slots comes as the national flag
carrier rebuilds its international network following the restoration of its
access to European markets. The additional capacity is expected to be put to use
under PIA’s winter schedule beginning in October, according to aviation
sources.
PIA is considering increasing its Islamabad-London service from three to
five flights a week, while flights between Lahore and London could rise from
one to two weekly services.
The planned increase would give passengers in Pakistan greater access to
direct flights to the UK and could also improve connections for travellers
originating from Karachi and Sialkot, who can connect to London through PIA’s
domestic network.
Heathrow Slots Return to PIA
The Heathrow slots are particularly valuable because of the airport’s
capacity constraints and its importance as one of the world’s major
international aviation hubs.

Airlines returns 14 weekly Heathrow slots to Pakistan International Airlines
PIA had previously lost control of part of its Heathrow capacity after its
European operations were disrupted. In 2022, seven Heathrow slots were
temporarily allocated to other airlines as the national carrier faced
restrictions on its European services.
Six of those slots were assigned to Turkish Airlines, while another was
allocated to Kuwait Airways for a six-month period.
The temporary arrangements enabled the slots to remain commercially active
while PIA dealt with restrictions affecting its European operations. The return
of the capacity now provides the airline with an opportunity to rebuild its
schedule at Heathrow.
A New Chapter for PIA's UK Network
The move is another indication of PIA’s efforts to restore and expand its
international footprint. The UK remains one of the airline’s most important
overseas markets, reflecting strong travel demand generated by the large
Pakistani diaspora in Britain as well as business, family and tourism links
between the two countries.
Heathrow, in particular, is strategically important because of its
connectivity to London and onward destinations across the UK and beyond.
The additional slots could allow PIA to offer passengers more frequent
services while improving schedule flexibility and strengthening the commercial
viability of its London operation.

The planned increase in Islamabad and Lahore services would also mark a
further step in the carrier’s post-restriction recovery, transforming the
return of Heathrow capacity into tangible additional flights for passengers.
With 14 Heathrow slots back under its control, PIA now has the capacity to
make London a stronger pillar of its international network and deepen direct
air links between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.
