Transparency International Pakistan asks Prime Minister to suspend airport project

International Pakistan has urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to suspend a
proposed Rs20 billion airport development project, citing concerns over the
procurement process and compliance with the Public Procurement Regulatory
Authority (PPRA) Rules.
In a letter addressed to the prime minister, the
anti-corruption watchdog called for the project to be put on hold until all
legal and procedural requirements are fully met, arguing that the current
procurement process could compromise transparency and fair competition.

The organisation also recommended an independent review
of the project's planning, bidding and approval procedures to assess whether
they comply with the PPRA's regulatory framework.
Transparency International Pakistan said that
large-scale public sector projects involving substantial public funds should be
awarded through transparent, competitive and merit-based procurement processes
to ensure accountability and protect the public interest.
The matter has been referred to the federal government for consideration.
However, no official response had been issued by the government regarding the
organisation's recommendations at the time of publication.
