PIA to ensure reliability of its Boeing 777 fleet by leasing GE90 engines
Pakistan
International Airlines (PIA) has invited bids to lease GE90 engines for
its Boeing 777 aircraft as part of efforts to strengthen technical readiness
ahead of the launch of new long-haul services.
The move signals the national carrier’s focus on
ensuring adequate engine availability as it prepares to operate high-demand
international routes, particularly flights to the United Kingdom.
PIA is in the final stages of planning the
resumption of London services using the Boeing 777, which remains one of the
airline’s most commercially significant aircraft types. According to the
proposed schedule, the Islamabad–London route is expected to begin on March 29,
with three weekly flights operating on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The
Lahore–London service is projected to start on March 30, with one weekly flight
scheduled on Mondays.

The Boeing 777 forms the backbone of PIA’s
long-haul operations and offers higher passenger capacity than the airline’s
other wide-body aircraft. Leasing additional GE90 engines is intended to
enhance operational reliability and reduce the risk of flight disruptions
caused by technical issues.
In parallel with its international expansion
plans, PIA has also initiated preparations for the Ramadan 2026 travel season.
The airline has issued separate tenders for onboard iftar items, including date
packs and juice boxes, for both domestic and international flights, with
suppliers expected to submit bids later this month.
Together,
these measures suggest that PIA is working to stabilise operations, improve
service continuity, and position itself to meet both seasonal demand and the
requirements of an expanding long-haul network.
