World Civil Aviation Day: Pakistan working to upgrade and reconstruct airports

As countries around the globe celebrate International Civil Aviation Day, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to modernizing the nation’s aviation network and improving passenger services at major airports.

In a statement released on Sunday, the PAA said it is fast-tracking several high-impact projects aimed at ensuring safer, more efficient, and fully modernized flight operations across Pakistan.

According to the authority, the expansion of Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport terminal is moving ahead on schedule, with completion targeted for September 2026. Meanwhile, runway rehabilitation works at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport are expected to conclude by January 2026.

The PAA added that RNP-AR flight procedures—advanced navigation technology that minimizes weather-related disruptions—are planned for Skardu, Gilgit, and Chitral by June 2026, pending the outcome of an ongoing feasibility study led by international consultants.

The authority further announced that new greenfield airports in Dera Ismail Khan, Sukkur, and Faisalabad have entered the planning stage, signalling a major expansion of Pakistan’s aviation footprint.

Upgrades at Skardu Airport, along with Phase II development of the Muridke General Aviation Aerodrome, are set to commence next year. Additional projects, including Phase II of Lahore Airport’s expansion and the final expansion phase for Karachi Airport, have been integrated into the 2026 development roadmap.

At Karachi Airport, the PAA has also finalized locations for a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower and a rescue fire station, both designed to strengthen air traffic management and enhance safety standards.

The Pakistan Airports Authority emphasized that these initiatives are part of its long-term vision to build a safer, more accessible, and future-ready aviation ecosystem for the country.
