Mirpur to get its first airport of international standard

In a landmark move, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has approved the construction of a modern international airport in Mirpur, marking a major step toward improving regional connectivity and providing advanced air travel facilities for residents and overseas Kashmiris.

According to official sources, construction is expected to begin within the current financial year as part of a broader infrastructure development initiative for AJK. The project aims to enhance domestic and international travel access while contributing to the region’s economic growth and investment potential.

Technical feasibility and site selection

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) confirmed that the technical feasibility and site selection process is already underway. This includes identifying a suitable location and conducting detailed technical and environmental assessments.

“The Pakistan Airports Authority has initiated feasibility studies and site selection, with initial technical work expected to be completed by December 2025,” the spokesperson stated.

Once the feasibility and design approvals are finalized, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held to officially launch construction of the Mirpur International Airport, one of the region’s most anticipated development projects.

Boosting connectivity and economic growth

Officials noted that the new airport will provide direct air connectivity for the people of AJK—particularly for overseas Kashmiris—reducing their reliance on distant airports in Islamabad and other provinces.

The project is also expected to stimulate local economic activity, create employment opportunities, and attract domestic and foreign investment.
