Closure of Muzaffarabad Airport irks citizens
Muzaffarabad Airport, located in the capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), has been closed for the past 23 years, sparking growing demands from local residents for its immediate restoration.
Established in 1987 by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, the airport initially began with two flights. However, due to a drop in passenger numbers, it was shut down in 2001. Following the 2005 earthquake, the airport was briefly reopened to facilitate relief operations, serving as a hub for helicopter services delivering aid to the affected areas. Since then, it has remained closed for commercial use.

Airport set to undergo improvements
Citizens of Muzaffarabad have voiced their concerns, stressing that the reopening of the airport is crucial for the region's development, particularly in tourism and the economy. They have called on the Pakistani government to take immediate action to restore the airport, which they believe will open up travel opportunities for both domestic and international tourists, thus revolutionizing the local tourism sector.
Currently, Muzaffarabad Airport is not in operation for regular passenger flights but remains available for emergency landings and occasional VIP or military activities. Given the region's breathtaking mountainous landscape and proximity to key tourist destinations, local residents see the airport’s restoration as a key step in promoting regional growth and improving connectivity.
