Pakistan's PakSat-MM1 to transform connectivity in the country
Pakistan has taken a major step
forward in its space program with the successful launch of PakSat-MM1, the
country’s first multi-mission satellite. This development marks Pakistan’s
entry into space-based broadband services, positioning it as a competitor to
Elon Musk’s Starlink and significantly advancing the nation’s technological
capabilities.
Shaza Fatima, Pakistan’s Minister of
State for Information Technology, announced the launch alongside the introduction
of the country’s first National Space Policy. She emphasized the critical role
PakSat-MM1 will play within this new policy, especially in transforming
connectivity in Pakistan, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

Fatima highlighted the satellite’s
potential to address one of Pakistan’s long-standing challenges—extending
internet access to rural regions where traditional infrastructure has
struggled. She expressed optimism that the satellite could drive major
improvements in sectors like education and healthcare through enhanced digital
access.
SUPARCO Chairman Yusuf Khan and
PakSat CEO Khalid Rashid praised the satellite’s broad capabilities, which
include providing broadband internet, telecommunications, and data transfer
services. They emphasized that PakSat-MM1 will not only improve internet speeds
nationwide but will also support 5G coverage, overcoming the high costs and
logistical challenges of traditional telecom infrastructure in hard-to-reach
areas.
