Election body stops caretaker government to privatize PIA
Pakistan's election body has scrapped interim government's plan to privatize loss-making national carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
The election management body recently reminded the caretaker government of its role and limitations in a letter to the Cabinet Secretary and requested all relevant documents.
The committee also urged the government not to take any further steps, including signing an agreement to privatize PIA or its departments.
Pakistan had agreed in
June to restructure its loss-making state-owned enterprises as part of a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a $3 billion bailout.
Just a few weeks after the signing of the IMF agreement, the government decided to privatize the national carrier PIA. The caretaker government formed in August to oversee the February 8 elections was authorized by the outgoing parliament to take all necessary steps to achieve the fiscal targets agreed with the IMF.
