Modern Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower to be constructed at Karachi airport
The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has given its
approval for the construction of a cutting-edge Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower
at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, marking a significant development
in airport infrastructure and safety measures. During a board meeting held in
Karachi, PCAA officials made this crucial decision.
The PCAA has set in motion plans to build a world-class ATC tower
as well as a Rescue Fire Fighting (RFF) complex at Jinnah International
Airport. The current ATC tower, which has been in operation for an impressive
91 years, faces height limitations and is no longer considered suitable for
modern aviation requirements.
The green light for a new, state-of-the-art ATC tower is expected
to not only address these limitations but also greatly enhance visibility and
flight safety. It's worth noting that the project is anticipated to be
completed within a year.
Furthermore, the decision to establish an RFF complex is geared
towards enhancing fire safety measures at Karachi airport. This complex will
house fire offices and modern fire stations, ensuring a swift and effective
response to any emergency situations that may arise.
To proceed with the project, the PCAA will require approval from the
Central Tender Working Party (CTWP) due to foreign exchange costs amounting to
over 25 percent of the project's design cost. Following this approval, the CAA
will formalize an agreement with the chosen consultant for the project.
It is important to highlight that the new tower's location and
height specifications will strictly adhere to international standards and
modern aviation requirements, ensuring its effectiveness and compliance with
global aviation norms, as emphasized by a PCAA spokesperson.
