Multan Airport conducts full-scale emergency drill to assess aviation safety readiness

The exercise was held in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards

Drill held at Multan Airport to evaluate preparedness for aircraft-related incidents

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has conducted a full-scale emergency response exercise at Multan International Airport to evaluate preparedness for aircraft-related incidents and strengthen coordination among emergency services.

Held on Thursday in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, the exercise tested communication procedures, rescue capabilities and the deployment of resources during a simulated aviation emergency.

The drill began with a fuel-firefighting demonstration involving the PAA’s specialised fire tenders before progressing to a simulated aircraft crash and large-scale passenger evacuation.

Emergency response teams from the Edhi Foundation, Rescue 1122 and the airport authority participated in the operation, alongside personnel from Pakistan Army Aviation, local fire brigades and ambulances from public hospitals.

During the simulated incident, a fire broke out following a mock aircraft crash landing, prompting rescue teams to evacuate 70 passengers. The evacuation and rescue operation was completed within 15 minutes.

Chief Fire Officer Aslam Rizvi led the exercise, which was designed to assess the effectiveness of emergency procedures and the ability of participating agencies to respond quickly to a critical incident.

The participation of multiple agencies enabled airport authorities to evaluate coordination between firefighting, medical assistance and rescue teams under simulated emergency conditions.

Such exercises form an important part of airport safety management, helping identify operational gaps and improve the readiness of personnel responsible for responding to aircraft accidents and other emergencies.

The PAA conducted the drill as part of its efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness and maintain safety procedures in accordance with international civil aviation requirements.
