Pakistan’s aviation sector supports nearly 684,000 jobs 

Pakistan’s aviation sector contributes an estimated $5.6 billion to the national economy and supports nearly 684,000 jobs, underscoring its significant role in driving economic growth, tourism, and trade, according to a report released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The report states that the air transport industry accounts for approximately 1.7 per cent of Pakistan’s gross domestic product (GDP) through its direct, indirect, induced, and tourism-related economic activities.

According to IATA, airlines, airport operators, air navigation service providers, and aviation manufacturers directly employ around 56,700 people across the country. These activities generate approximately $2.1 billion in economic output, representing 0.6 per cent of Pakistan’s GDP.

The report notes that the sector’s overall economic impact expands significantly when supply chain activities, employee spending, and tourism-related employment are taken into account. Combined, these factors support nearly 683,900 jobs and contribute $5.6 billion to the national economy.

Tourism enabled by air connectivity also plays a vital role, contributing an estimated $952.1 million to the economy while supporting approximately 227,900 jobs. In addition, international visitors arriving in Pakistan by air are estimated to spend around $1.6 billion annually on goods and services provided by local businesses.

The findings highlight the aviation industry's growing importance as a catalyst for employment, tourism, international connectivity, and broader economic development, reinforcing its strategic role in supporting Pakistan’s long-term growth prospects.
