Lahore’s Allama Iqbal Airport to undergo modernization and expansion project

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced a major expansion and modernization project at Allama Iqbal International Airport (AIIAP) in Lahore, aiming to enhance passenger experience and streamline airport operations. The initiative was revealed during a National Assembly session, with the Defence Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, outlining the multi-billion-rupee plan.

The project, estimated at PKR 43,403.29 million, is scheduled for completion by September 2026. At its core is the expansion of the terminal building from 69,500 sqm to 107,000 sqm, accommodating the growing number of passengers and improving operational efficiency.

Key upgrades will include additional check-in and immigration counters, expanded passenger processing areas, advanced baggage handling systems, new boarding bridges, and enhanced stand equipment. The terminal will also feature upgraded restrooms, seating areas, restaurants, and commercial spaces for a more comfortable travel experience.

Airside infrastructure will be strengthened with an apron expansion to handle two extra wide-body aircraft, improved taxiways, a Pre-Conditioned Air (PCA) system, and a 400Hz aircraft ground power system to support modern aircraft. Access roads around the airport will also be upgraded to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
