Lahore’s Allama Iqbal Airport to undergo modernization and expansion project
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has
announced a major expansion and modernization project at Allama
Iqbal International Airport (AIIAP) in Lahore, aiming to enhance passenger
experience and streamline airport operations. The initiative was revealed
during a National Assembly session, with the Defence
Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, outlining the multi-billion-rupee plan.
The project, estimated at PKR 43,403.29 million,
is scheduled for completion by September 2026. At its core is the expansion of
the terminal building from 69,500 sqm to 107,000 sqm, accommodating the growing
number of passengers and improving operational efficiency.

Key upgrades will include additional check-in and immigration counters, expanded passenger processing areas, advanced baggage handling systems, new boarding bridges, and enhanced stand equipment. The terminal will also feature upgraded restrooms, seating areas, restaurants, and commercial spaces for a more comfortable travel experience.
Airside infrastructure will be strengthened
with an apron expansion to handle two extra wide-body aircraft, improved
taxiways, a Pre-Conditioned Air (PCA) system, and a 400Hz aircraft ground power
system to support modern aircraft. Access roads around the airport will also be
upgraded to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

The modernization of AIIAP is part of a broader effort to bring Pakistan’s airports in line with international standards while meeting the country’s rising air travel demand.
