PIA's Board gives approval to allowance increase of aircraft engineers
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has approved an increase in allowances for its aircraft engineers following a prolonged protest led by the Society of Aircraft Engineers of Pakistan (SAEP). The decision was made by the airline’s Board of Directors after reviewing PIA’s safety performance over the past two years.
The industrial action began on November 2, when aircraft engineers stopped issuing mandatory flight clearance certificates, leading to widespread cancellations and delays across the airline’s network. Engineers had also staged a symbolic protest for more than two months by wearing protest bands on their shoulders.

SAEP representatives highlighted concerns over major salary disparities and persistent safety issues, including shortages of essential spare parts.
According to a PIA spokesperson, the revised allowances will be reflected in December salaries with retrospective effect from November. The Board said the decision acknowledges the engineers’ professional role and is intended to strengthen operational standards.
The approval comes as the government prepares for PIA’s potential privatization, signaling an effort to stabilize workforce relations before any change in ownership.

The Board’s decision follows a thorough review of PIA’s safety and operational performance. The move ends a significant labor dispute that had severely disrupted flight operations and marks a positive development for both the engineering union and airline management during a critical phase of restructuring.
