The federal government is preparing to make a historic investment in Pakistan’s space ambitions, proposing a Rs24 billion allocation for SUPARCO (Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission) in the FY2025–26 development budget, according to a report by The Express Tribune.

This significant funding signals Pakistan’s intention to advance in space exploration and satellite technology, with a strong focus on strategic and scientific initiatives.

Among the highlights of the proposed budget:

  • Rs600 million has been earmarked for Pakistan’s first-ever manned space mission, a landmark project that is expected to become a symbol of national pride.
  • Over Rs18 billion is allocated for the Multi-Mission Communication Satellite System, which will play a critical role in national communications and space-based services.
  • Rs400 million is proposed for the launch of a Pakistan Lunar Exploration initiative, marking the country's entry into lunar research.
  • Rs1.8 billion is planned for a Deep Space Astronomical project, enhancing Pakistan’s capabilities in space observation and research.
  • Rs1.7 billion is dedicated to the Pakistan Optical Remote Sensing Satellite program, aimed at advancing Earth observation and data collection.

In addition to space exploration, the proposed development budget includes allocations for other strategic sectors:

  • Over Rs500 million for the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) to support economic initiatives.
  • Rs50 billion for the Cabinet Division, and another Rs50 billion for development schemes backed by members of parliament.
  • Rs134.2 million for infrastructure upgrades in Islamabad, Rs100 million for the restoration and modernization of the National Archives, and Rs650 million for a new Hajj Complex in Lahore.

If approved, the budget will represent a major leap forward for Pakistan's space program, with SUPARCO at the forefront of efforts to strengthen the country’s position in the global space and geospatial landscape.
