Cases of bird strike reduce at Karachi Airport
Bird-aircraft collisions at Karachi’s Jinnah
International Airport declined by more than 15% in 2024, the airport’s
Environmental Control Committee (ECC) reported, crediting sustained habitat
control and community engagement efforts for the improvement.
The ECC noted that the positive trend has
continued into 2025, with fewer incidents recorded so far this year.
In preparation for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha holiday, when waste accumulation typically increases bird activity near the airport, the ECC has intensified its focus on cleanliness and bird hazard prevention. As part of a broader awareness drive, the committee announced plans to include bird hazard warnings in Friday sermons and Eid addresses at nearby mosques.

A public awareness campaign is set to launch
immediately, with informational pamphlets being distributed to residents,
businesses, hotels, and restaurants in the surrounding areas. These efforts
build on previous years’ initiatives aimed at reducing bird-attracting
conditions near the airport.
Airport authorities have directed all stakeholders
to thoroughly clean garbage collection points and identify high-risk areas for
bird activity. Vendors selling pigeon feed near the airport will face strict
enforcement measures, as such practices have been found to significantly
increase the risk of bird strikes.
The ECC also emphasized the need to reinforce habitat control measures, including deterring bird nesting near the airside. The Pakistan Airports Authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe and clean airport environment through enhanced coordination with local authorities during the Eid season.
