Aviation sector is being revamped and modernized, senate informed
Minister for Defense Khawaja Asif assured the Senate on Tuesday that the
government is actively addressing the operational challenges faced by Pakistan
International Airlines (PIA), including the temporary suspension of flights to
destinations like Chitral and Larkana. These disruptions, exacerbated by harsh
weather conditions and a shortage of ATR aircraft, are being tackled, according
to ARY News.
In response to concerns raised by senators, Asif acknowledged PIA’s current
limitations, noting that the airline only has three ATR aircraft, one of which
is grounded. "We are working to get the grounded aircraft back into
service to resume flights to underserved areas," he said. He also mentioned
ongoing discussions with private airlines to improve connectivity to remote
regions.

being privatized under government's policy, senate informed
The minister highlighted several systemic challenges PIA is facing, such as
bans on flights to lucrative routes in the UK and Europe. However, Asif
expressed optimism, stating that audit teams are reviewing operations, and
these routes are expected to reopen soon.
Asif emphasized the government’s commitment to subsidizing flights for
residents of remote areas and revamping smaller airports to make them fully
operational. “We are encouraging private airlines to operate from smaller
airports like Chitral and Larkana to ensure affordable air travel for the local
population,” he said.
Addressing broader concerns regarding PIA’s future, Asif stated that the
government is actively working to restructure the airline. "A
privatization effort is being reconsidered to improve operational efficiency
and service delivery," he explained, noting that reviving PIA will require
significant time and resources.

Senators, including Falak Naz and Saifullah Abro, raised concerns about the
lack of spare parts for ATR aircraft and questioned when services to remote
areas will be resumed. Senator Shahzaib Durrani suggested upgrading Chitral
Airport to accommodate larger aircraft, a proposal Asif agreed to explore,
despite the operational challenges posed by the region’s terrain.
Concluding his remarks, Asif reassured the Senate that the government is
committed to enhancing connectivity across Pakistan, stating, “This matter
requires a comprehensive evaluation, and I request the opportunity to revisit
these issues in the next session with concrete solutions.”
