Italian aircraft carrier arrives in Karachi for a three-day visit
The Italian Navy’s Carrier Strike Group, featuring an aircraft carrier and a
frigate, has arrived in Karachi for a three-day visit aimed at enhancing
regional maritime security and defense collaboration between Italy and
Pakistan.
The fleet includes the aircraft carrier Cavour and the
frigate Alpino, which docked in Karachi on Monday. They were
welcomed by senior officials from the Pakistan Navy and Italian Ambassador to
Pakistan, Marilina Armellin.
This visit marks the first time an Italian aircraft carrier has visited
Pakistan. The Pakistan Navy stated, “The Italian Navy Carrier Strike Group
comprising Aircraft Carrier Cavour and frigate Alpino arrived in Karachi on a
three-day visit, followed by a bilateral exercise.”
During the visit, a delegation led by Ambassador Armellin and Rear Admiral
Stefano Barbieri met with Pakistan Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Abdul Munib to
discuss matters of mutual interest, including interoperability and future

Karachi Commander Vice Admiral Muhammad Faisal Abbasi also toured the

from Italian Commanding Officer Captain Francesco Fagnani.
Ambassador Armellin remarked, “This is the fourth visit by an Italian ship
to Karachi, with three frigates having previously visited. However, this is the
first time our aircraft carrier has come to Pakistan. The bond of friendship
between Rome and Islamabad is growing stronger.”
She further emphasized, “The presence of the Italian Carrier Strike Group in
the Indo-Pacific region reflects Italy’s commitment to deepening cooperation
with valued partners like Pakistan and ensuring the security of international
maritime routes. Italy regards Pakistan as a strategic partner for regional
security, and defense plays a crucial role in our bilateral relations. Our
country has consistently participated in the Aman Exercises, and our defense
industries have always been represented at the IDEAS fairs.”
