Iraq looking to buy fighter aircraft from Pakistan
In a move to bolster its defense capabilities, Iraq
is in discussions with Pakistan to acquire JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets
and Super Mushshak trainer aircraft. The talks signify a deepening military
collaboration between the two countries.
On August 20, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar hosted a high-level Iraqi
delegation led by Lieutenant General Ahmed Dawood Salman at the Pakistan Air
Force (PAF) headquarters in Islamabad. The meeting focused on mutual interests,
particularly in enhancing bilateral training and exploring expanded aviation
sector cooperation, according to a PAF statement.
Retired PAF squadron leader and international analyst Fahad Masood noted
that this meeting, long in the making, reflects the serious intentions of both
parties and could lead to significant developments.

"The two countries have been engaged in regular discussions and
meetings at various levels regarding the procurement of these jets. Delegations
from both sides have also met outside of the Dubai Air Show, underscoring the
importance of this relationship. The visit by a high-ranking Iraqi team to
Pakistan’s Air Force headquarters suggests a major step forward is
imminent," said Masood.
The JF-17 Thunder jets, co-developed by China’s Chengdu Aircraft Industry
Corp. and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, have undergone significant upgrades to
the Block III variant. These improvements include advanced avionics, radars,
missile technology, and Digital Video Recording (DVR) systems. The aircraft
also features a Helmet-Mounted Display (HMD) that projects information directly
onto the pilot's visor, and dual ejection racks for enhanced operational
capability.
"The Iraqi officials are particularly interested in these
upgrades," Masood explained. "The JF-17 Thunder Block III represents
a significant advancement over earlier variants, making it an attractive option
for Iraq."

to deliver 12 more Super Mushshak aircraft to Iraq: PAF Chief
In addition to the JF-17, Iraq is also considering the purchase of Super
Mushshak trainer aircraft, which are equipped with modern glass cockpits and
designed as durable, lightweight two- or three-seater planes. These trainers
are intended to be integrated into Iraq's initial training program and Lead-In
Fighter Training (LIFT).
"The Mushshak trainers are highly sought after, having been sold to
countries like Zimbabwe and several GCC nations. Iraq’s interest in these
trainers, along with the Thunder jets, highlights their focus on
cost-effective, high-tech training solutions," added Masood.
Pakistan delivered an initial batch of Mushshak aircraft to Iraq in 2023,
and following their successful integration, Iraq has decided to purchase
additional units. The exact number of aircraft Iraq plans to buy is still
unknown, but once determined, the timeline for delivery will become clearer.
Masood concluded that Iraq's decision to pursue both the JF-17 and Mushshak
aircraft is a "sound choice," given their recent upgrades and
suitability for modern air power and military training.
