Skardu Airport to be promoted to attract international tourism
The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has made the
decision to elevate Skardu Airport to meet international standards with the aim
of boosting tourism, as reported by ARY News.
Khaqan Murtaza, the Director General of CAA, shared in an
exclusive conversation with ARY News that the CAA has formulated an open sky
policy for Skardu Airport to encourage tourism.

In this context, Murtaza explained that preparations have
commenced to enhance Skardu Airport to meet international standards. He emphasized
the goal of establishing the northern regions as a tourism hub, even during the
winter season.
Murtaza highlighted that Saudi aviation officials, who
recently visited Pakistan, were pleasantly surprised by the natural beauty of
the northern region. Furthermore, Saudi authorities have expressed interest in
launching direct flights to Skardu.

Additionally, Murtaza mentioned that the airport now
provides refueling facilities for aircraft, and efforts are underway to expand
oil storage for aircraft in the northern regions.
Skardu, nestled in the Karakoram mountain range, offers a
captivating experience for adventurers, nature enthusiasts, and history
enthusiasts alike.
Skardu attained international airport status following the
landing of Pakistan International Airline's (PIA) first international flight in
August 2023. PIA's inaugural international flight, Flight 234, originating from
Dubai, touched down in Skardu. Passengers were greeted with the iconic
traditional caps of Gilgit-Baltistan and thoughtful gifts.
To commemorate this historic moment, airport authorities
marked the occasion with a vibrant water cannon salute to the arriving
aircraft.
