New Gwadar International Airport to start flights on January 20
The New Gwadar International Airport
is set to commence operations on January 20, according to a statement released
by Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority on Thursday.
Funded as a donation from China, the
airport is a state-of-the-art 4F-grade facility, capable of accommodating the
world’s largest civil aircraft. With a 3,658-meter-long and 75-meter-wide
runway featuring advanced foundation treatments, the airport represents a new
standard in engineering excellence.

The facility is designed to enhance
regional connectivity and economic integration. It includes a spacious apron
with five slots for wide-body aircraft and provisions for significant cargo
operations, featuring a dedicated cargo shed and planned expansions to support
growing trade and logistics needs.
The airport aims to address previous
connectivity challenges, enabling modern airlines to serve Gwadar, boosting
regional economic development, and positioning the city as a key transshipment
hub. Its strategic significance is tied to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor
(CPEC).

Launched in 2013, CPEC is a flagship
project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, linking Gwadar Port in
Balochistan province with Kashgar in China’s Xinjiang region. Initially focused
on energy, transport, and industrial collaboration, the project has since
expanded to include agriculture, livelihoods, and other sectors, further
strengthening bilateral cooperation.
