Pakistan voices concern against weaponization of outer space
Pakistan has urged the international community to intensify efforts to
prevent an arms race in outer space, warning that any conflict originating
there could have widespread and far-reaching consequences.
In remarks to the United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee on
Disarmament and International Security, Pakistan’s delegate, Gul Qaiser
Sarwani, highlighted the growing risks of conflict in outer space. “The fallout
will ripple across all domains of life, imposing overwhelming costs on all of
us. Even countries without space assets will not be spared,” Sarwani cautioned
during Thursday's debate.

Sarwani, a counsellor at Pakistan's Mission to the United Nations,
underscored how the increasing militarization of space could destabilize
international and regional security. He expressed concern over the integration
of missile defense systems with space-based technologies, which could lead to a
dangerous escalation of defensive and offensive capabilities. “With modern
warfare increasingly dependent on space-based assets, there is a genuine risk
that conflicts on Earth could extend into outer space,” he warned.
Calling for concrete, effective action, Sarwani lamented the lack of
progress on global agreements to prevent an arms race in outer space, an
objective set forth by the Outer Space Treaty nearly six decades ago.

He stressed that now, more than ever, the world must honor that commitment
and take meaningful steps to safeguard space as a realm free from weapons.
