Chip-based biometric passports introduced in Pakistan
Pakistan has introduced chip-based biometric passports along with
an updated fee structure, announced by the Directorate General of Immigration
and Passports, offering enhanced security features and efficiency in travel
documentation for Pakistani nationals.
The e-passports, equipped with a digital signature, a unique
identification number, and personal information stored in an electronic chip
integrated into one of the passport pages, provide advanced security measures
compared to traditional machine-readable documents. Over 150 nations globally
have adopted chip-based passports, primarily improving operational
effectiveness and border security. Pakistani nationals have gained access to
e-gate facilities at airports worldwide since the launch of these
state-of-the-art passports, streamlining travel procedures. Additionally, the
application process has been made more efficient, allowing candidates to apply
online and eliminating some of the shortcomings of the previous manual method.

The new fee structure for e-passports, effective from March 2024,
offers various categories based on validity periods and page counts, with
additional charges for urgent processing. For instance, passports with embedded
electronic chips and 36 pages cost 9,000 Pakistani rupees (US$32.25) for 5
years of validity and Rs 13,500 ($48.40) for 10 years. Urgent issuance incurs
higher fees of Rs 15,500 ($55.57) and Rs 22,500 ($80.66) respectively, while
the 72-page version carries additional costs.
The application process for the new e-passport involves several
steps at Pakistani Regional Passport Offices, including fee verification, image
capturing, biometric data capture (such as fingerprints), data input, verification,
and an applicant interview conducted by an assistant director of immigration.
Once completed, applicants can collect their passports, finalizing the
procedure.
Electronic
Gates to be installed at all Pakistani airports
The implementation of chip passports in March 2022 marked a
significant milestone in Pakistan's public service delivery, inaugurated by
former Prime Minister Imran Khan. These passports feature robust security
measures, including infrared radiation (IR) and ultraviolet radiation (UV)
protection, and comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
regulations to prevent traveler impersonation.
Key features of the e-passport include an embedded electronic chip
storing biometric data, laser engraving for authenticity and anti-tampering,
and contactless near-field communication (NFC) technology facilitating
efficient travel through e-gate facilities. The transition to e-passports
benefits Pakistani nationals by providing accessibility, enhanced security, and
streamlined immigration procedures at airports worldwide.
