Pakistani foreign minister asks UK foreign secretary for resumption of PIA flights to UK
Pakistan is actively seeking the early reinstatement of Pakistan
International Airlines (PIA) flights to the United Kingdom (UK), as
communicated by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. In a recent telephone conversation
with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, Dar highlighted the significance
of concluding an Enhanced Strategic Partnership agreement between the two
nations to bolster bilateral ties. Stressing the longstanding and multifaceted
cooperation between Pakistan and the UK, Dar emphasized the need to enhan
ce
collaboration across various sectors, including trade, investment,
people-to-people contacts, and climate initiatives.
PIA
may resume flights to EU in six months: Aviation Minister
Dar specifically called for the prompt resumption of PIA flights
between Pakistan and the UK to strengthen connections, particularly given the
substantial Pakistani diaspora in Britain. The suspension of PIA's
international operations, initiated by several countries including the UK in
July 2020 due to concerns regarding pilots' licensing authenticity, has been a
matter of concern.
In addition to discussing bilateral matters, Dar and Cameron also
addressed important regional issues such as Afghanistan and the situation in
Gaza. Dar extended an invitation to Lord Cameron to visit Pakistan, expressing
gratitude for the British foreign secretary's congratulatory message on his
appointment as foreign minister and affirming his commitment to enhancing
bilateral relations.
New
timeline announced for resumption of flights from Pakistan to Europe
Prior to this conversation, Dar had raised the issue during his
recent engagements in London with UK Minister of State for South Asia and
Commonwealth Lord Tariq Ahmad and Minister of State for Development Andrew
Mitchell at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office. Prime Minister
Shehbaz Sharif has expressed eagerness to resume PIA flight operations in the
UK, with Islamabad undertaking measures to address hurdles in the national flag
carrier's international flight operations, including completing necessary
inspections and updating Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations in line
with global standards. The country's aviation authority has expressed optimism
that PIA flights to the UK will resume in May following the completion of all
inspections.
