PIA declines to fifth position in domestic airline
rankings
On September 29, 2023, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority
(CAA) unveiled the much-anticipated airline rankings for 2023, providing
insights into the punctuality performance of domestic flights.
The latest rankings reveal a significant decline for the once-prominent
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), which now occupies the fifth position
among domestic carriers. This decline paints a somber picture of the national
airline's trajectory, marked by mismanagement, a severe financial crisis, and
persistent challenges in maintaining on-time flight schedules, all of which
have significantly impacted its overall ranking.

During the first half of 2023, PIA's performance metrics,
especially in terms of punctuality, experienced a notable downturn. Notably,
PIA's on-time departure and arrival records suffered due to operational
difficulties, as highlighted in the report.
The statistics indicate that PIA's departure punctuality for
domestic flights plummeted to a disappointing 58.24 percent, a stark contrast
to the performance of private airlines operating in Pakistan. The private
airline Fly Jinnah, for instance, outperformed the national carrier with an
impressive 87.93 percent on-time departure rate. Air Sial closely followed,
securing the second spot with a commendable 86.89 percent. Air Blue claimed the
third position with a punctuality rate of 78.36 percent, while Serene Airlines
secured the fourth place with a 62 percent on-time departure record.

The CAA's comprehensive report encompasses the
classification of flight regularity for Pakistani airlines from January to June
2023, offering a clear overview of their performance.
Amidst these rankings, it is essential to underscore PIA's
ongoing struggle with a severe financial crisis, casting uncertainty over its
ability to sustain air operations amid mounting debts.
These rankings serve as a poignant reminder of the
challenges facing Pakistan's aviation industry, emphasizing the urgent need for
reform and revitalization to restore the country's reputation in the global
aviation arena.
