ITF asks Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority to
investigate death of purser
The International Transport Workers Federation
(ITF) has expressed serious concerns about Pakistan International Airlines
(PIA) failing to comply with cabin crew regulations, which led to the tragic
death of Purser Rashda Majeed in a fatal road accident. The ITF has sent a
letter to the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority’s (PCAA) director general,
urging an investigation into the incident.
In their communication, the ITF, a prominent
global union federation representing 18.5 million transport workers worldwide,
highlighted the urgent need for an inquiry into PIA's management of flight
services.
They specifically raised suspicions of violations
of PIA's SEP (Safety and Emergency Procedures) manual and flight and duty time
restrictions. These concerns, brought forward by the Pakistan Airlines Cabin
Crew Association (PACCA), an affiliate of ITF, underscore the crucial issue of
operational safety within the national carrier.
The union drew attention to a road traffic
accident on June 29 that resulted in severe injuries to a cabin crew member and
the unfortunate loss of Senior Purser Rashda Majeed. In a subsequent letter
dated July 11, PACCA conveyed their distress to the PCAA, highlighting the
breach of rules specified in the Cabin Crew SEP manual.
The ITF demanded an unbiased investigation into the accident and a broader examination of the safety culture within PIA. They also called on the aviation authority to engage in dialogue with PACCA and other aviation trade unions. Recognizing the importance of addressing concerns related to working conditions, health, and safety, the ITF emphasized its role in fostering a harmonious work environment and enhancing the long-term prospects of both PIA and Pakistan's aviation industry.
