PAF working to enhance its air surveillance capabilities
The Pakistan Air Force (PAF), currently the world's largest operator of Saab 2000 aircraft, is moving to expand its fleet as part of ongoing efforts to enhance airborne surveillance and command-and-control capabilities.
According to official sources, the PAF operates 11 Saab 2000 aircraft, including nine configured as Erieye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platforms and two dedicated to VIP transport duties. The service is now seeking to acquire at least four additional Saab 2000 airframes, which are expected to be converted into AEW&C platforms to strengthen the country's aerial surveillance network.
The expansion forms part of the PAF’s broader modernization program aimed at improving multi-domain operational readiness amid evolving regional security challenges.

hands over Saab 2000 Erieye AEW&C aircraft to Pakistan
The Erieye AEW&C aircraft serve as a critical component of Pakistan’s air defense architecture, providing long-range airborne surveillance, command, and control support. Mounted on the Saab 2000 turboprop platform, the Erieye radar system is capable of detecting fighter-sized aircraft at ranges of up to 450 kilometers, enabling real-time airspace monitoring and coordination with frontline combat assets, including the JF-17 Thunder and J-10CE fighter fleets.
Pakistan first acquired the Saab 2000 Erieye system under a contract signed in 2006. Deliveries of the initial aircraft took place between 2009 and 2010, while subsequent procurements in 2017 and 2020 expanded the fleet to its current strength of nine AEW&C aircraft.
The fleet has faced operational setbacks in the past. One Erieye aircraft was destroyed during a militant attack on Kamra Air Base in 2012, while several others sustained damage. Those aircraft were subsequently repaired and returned to service through local maintenance and restoration efforts led by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex.
In addition to their surveillance role, two Saab 2000 aircraft are employed for VIP transport missions, providing reliable medium-range mobility for senior government and military officials.

2000 AEW&C playing a key role in PAF’s operational capabilities
Senior defense officials indicated that the planned acquisition of additional aircraft will significantly enhance Pakistan’s airborne early warning coverage and operational flexibility. Industry observers estimate that the procurement and conversion program could be worth several hundred million dollars, although no official contract value has been disclosed.
The Saab 2000 remains an attractive platform for the PAF due to its high cruising speed, endurance exceeding eight hours, and ability to operate from relatively short runways. These characteristics make it well suited to Pakistan’s diverse geographic and operational requirements.
The planned fleet expansion reflects the PAF’s continued investment in advanced sensors, network-centric warfare capabilities, and integrated air defense systems as it seeks to maintain a robust and responsive aerial surveillance posture.
