Chinese AEW&C Aircraft to bolster Pakistan's airborne early warning capabilities
Pakistan is reportedly moving forward with plans
to acquire the Chinese-built Shaanxi KJ-500 airborne early warning and control
(AEW&C) aircraft, a step analysts say could significantly shift the
strategic balance in South Asia—potentially more than additional fighter jets
or missile systems.
According to a Malaysia-based defence
publication, Defence
Security Asia, officials from both Pakistan and China confirmed in June
2025 that formal negotiations for the aircraft were underway. The KJ-500 is
expected to be included in a broader Chinese defense package.
The aircraft would enhance the Pakistan Air Force’s surveillance capabilities while enabling a more integrated combat management system, allowing for faster decision-making during potential crises, particularly in relation to India.

The report further notes that alongside
Pakistan’s interest in acquiring the J-35A fighter jet and the HQ-19 air
defense system, the KJ-500 would serve as a central command platform, linking
these assets into a unified network.
With its advanced radar and coordination capabilities, the KJ-500 is expected to help Pakistani forces detect incoming aircraft, missiles, and drones at longer ranges, enabling quicker and more effective responses through coordinated interceptor missions and air defense deployments.
