The United States has approved a
$686 million technology upgrade package for the Pakistan
Air Force’s (PAF) F-16 fleet, according to a letter sent to Congress by the
US Defense Security Cooperation Agency
(DSCA) on December 8.
Following the notification, a
mandatory 30-day congressional review period has begun, during which US
lawmakers will assess the proposed transfer of F-16-related technology to
Pakistan.

The DSCA said the proposed sale supports US foreign policy and national security objectives by enabling Pakistan to maintain interoperability with US and allied forces, particularly for ongoing counterterrorism operations and potential future missions.
The upgrade package includes Link-16
data-link systems, cryptographic equipment, avionics enhancements, training,
and comprehensive logistical support.
The approval follows a series of
positive engagements between Pakistan’s civilian and military leadership and
the US President. According to the DSCA, the package will modernise and
overhaul Pakistan’s Block-52 and Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) F-16 aircraft, strengthening
the country’s ability to counter existing and emerging threats.
