Sindh government takes steps to improve airport security

In response to the recent suicide attack near Jinnah International Airport, the Sindh government has announced the formation of a dedicated security committee to ensure the safety of the airport, according to a statement from the provincial Home Ministry on Tuesday.

The decision follows an attack, claimed by the outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), which resulted in the deaths of two Chinese citizens and left ten others injured.

In light of the incident, Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong has expressed Beijing's concerns over the safety of its citizens and investments, urging additional protective measures to address the growing security threats.

The committee was established following a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar at the Sindh Assembly. The meeting was attended by senior officials from various law enforcement agencies.

The newly formed committee will be comprised of key figures, including Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Home Iqbal Memon, the Additional Inspector General (IG) Karachi, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police East, representatives from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch (SB), Special Protection Unit, the Intelligence Bureau, Airport Security Force (ASF), Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), and other law enforcement agencies.

According to the statement, the committee will be tasked with developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for securing foreign nationals and assigning specific security duties to the relevant agencies and officials.

Minister Lanjar instructed the committee to draft a comprehensive set of SOPs, outlining the roles and responsibilities of each institution involved. He also called for the installation of additional closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to improve surveillance and enhance security measures at the airport.

The minister emphasized that security for foreign nationals would be further reinforced, with enhanced measures to ensure their protection.

Karachi's airport has been a target of terrorism in the past. In 2014, Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants carried out a deadly attack on the airport, killing 28 people, including 10 terrorists.
