Air India to increase its fleet to 470 aircraft
Air
India, the national carrier of India, is planning to enhance its fleet strength
to 470 aircraft in the coming years.
Chief
Executive Officer Campbell Wilson said on Tuesday that new aircraft will be
inducted as well as refurbishing work on older planes will be carried out.
Air
India has a current fleet of 113 aircraft and it will fund the $70 billion
order of new planes with internal cash, equity and through sale-and-leasebacks.
The
airline will purchase 220 of the planes from Boeing and 250 from Airbus.
Air
India is also in talks with other airlines that are a part of the Star Alliance
group of carriers to enhance cooperation.
The
airline in a bid to compete with bigger rivals such as Emirates is spending
$400 million on refurbishing and upgrading its planes.
